Yesterday at mass the public announcement was made; in recent weeks the papal document of approval was circulated. Everything is being dealt with according to the indications of the pope’s Letter. Disapproval for the presence of Ma Yinglin, illicit bishop of Kunming.

Over one thousand people took part in the ceremony, among them government representatives and members of the Patriotic Association . According to a local Catholic, Msgr. Li represents a great step forward for Church unity in China.

Pope approves Compendium of his Letter to the Catholics of China
The publication two years on from the Letter on the World Day of Prayer for the Church in China. The Letter is furthering unity between the official and underground Church, but the Patriotic Association pounces on their divisions with controls and arrests.

Liu Bainian goes back on his invitation to Pope, and the government talks of “changing times”.
Celebrating 50 years of the AP, the Chinese vice premier praises the Association for having guaranteed the Chinese churches independence, urging it to continue its work “with a spirit that changes with the times”.
