Beirut (AsiaNews) – The Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir will name no names ahead of the upcoming election for President of the Republic – who according to the Constitution must be Maronite – and sees in the proposition of two Presidents two governments put forward by the opposition and current president Emile – the danger of the destruction of Lebanon and does not exclude an appeal by the Maronite bishops.

 

In a long interview with the Orient-Le Jour, the cardinal refers to his meetings with Italian political leaders and Vatican prelates, including his audience with Benedict XVI, he also dwells on the choice for Head of State, a key moment in the evolution of the drawn out Lebanese political crises.  He must be, the Patriarch maintains, a man of accord, one who is “equidistant from both sides of the political field, sincere and of integrity, an export in political affairs”.

 

Still on the theme of elections, card. Sfeir mentions the possibility of a meeting with the Parliament Speaker, Nabih Berri, the main promoter of an initiative to which all of the political forces are referring, even if there has been no definitive mention of details.

 

Today the patriarch is due to meet with the UN representative charged with applying resolution 1559, Terjé Roed-Larsen.
