Nuncio to Washington says Israel not keeping its promises to the Holy See
Monsignor Sambi, who was the Vatican envoy to Israel until 2005, highlights the impasse in bilateral relations, due, he believes, to the fact that the Jewish state has failed in ten years to live up to the economic and fiscal commitments it made.

Pope receives Israeli President, reiterates agreements must be implemented
Benedict XVI told Moshe Katzav that the Holy See is in favour of a two-state solution: Israel and Palestine. He also insisted on the Church's demands that agreements already signed that recognise its legal status in Israel be respected.

New plenary meeting (and little hope) in Holy See-Israel negotiations
The Bilateral Commission meets tomorrow, followed the next day by a plenary session of both delegations. The Vatican has been waiting 14 years to see the Fundamental Accord implemented. Impatience is growing over unfulfilled promises.

The implementation of the Fundamental Agreement and discussions over tax exemptions for the Church have been going on since March of 1999. The next meeting will be held on December 17.

Israeli ministry contradicts itself: a Franciscan with a valid visa is turned away from Israel
The Israeli interior ministry seems to be working at cross purposes: it issues visas, and then does not recognise them. That is entirely the fault of the "secretiveness" that shrouds the procedure and criteria for issuing visas. There is also the need for the accords with the Vatican to be put into effect at last, in order to have clear rules for visas for ecclesiastical personnel.
