Underground Bishop of Xiwanzi dies, security tightened for funeral
Although the area is under heavy snow, thousands of faithful are expected for the funeral. The government bans display of Episcopal insignia, prohibits the publication of obituaries and allows only three priests to attend the ceremony. In 2009, 7 Chinese bishops died. In China only 94 pastors remain.
New bishop of Nanchang (Jiangxi) ordained, underground Catholics also present
The new bishop, Mgr. John Baptist Li Suguang, tells AsiaNews of his desire to work for unity between the two communities, underground and official living in the diocese. So far this year, nine bishops have been ordained in China.
New bishop of Wenzhou installed
The appointment of Mgr. Zhu Weifang was approved by the Holy See and recognized by the government. For Christmas he hopes for a "reconciliation" between official and "underground" Catholics. There are about 100 thousand Catholics In the diocese, many unofficial.

Over twenty thousand Catholics at the funeral of the Bishop of Zhaoxian
Mgr. Raymond Wang Chonglin died February 2 at 88. He spent 21 years in prison for his loyalty to the pope. Underground bishop ordained in '83, he was accepted by the government in '88.

New bishop of Taizhou ordained, after nearly 50 years of vacant see
Approved by the Vatican. The Diocese of Taizhu was among the first to have a Chinese bishop in 1926. The newly ordained bishop has spent 25 years in hard labour. "In prison I discovered that God is close to me". No problems in the relationship between official and underground Christians. After decades the diocese is reborn.
