Catholic NGO to help widows and children for Easter

by Inayat Bernard

Lahore (AsiaNews) – Milap, a Catholic NGO, is helping widows and children in the Eastern Pakistani city of Lahore prepare for Easter. As part of its Holy Week activities it has given small gifts to children and distributed 10 kg of wheat flour to widows.

Speaking at the meeting where such help was provided, Margaret Piara, Milap's director, explained that her organisation in cooperation with other NGOs is dedicated to helping women improve their situation. It does so by running sewing and adult literacy centres.

Ms Piara said that people who benefit from such services love and appreciate the dedication of Milap workers.

The widows who attended the Milap meeting thanked the NGO for its help and said they prayed that it might continue assisting needy people.

The meeting was livened up by children singing hymns and songs for Holy Week and staging scenes from the Passion of Christ. The little ones also prayed for an end to the flooding that has affected the country for several weeks. In Multan alone 44 Muslims pilgrims died on March 19 when the bus in which they were travelling was swept away by torrential rains.

Milap is also involved in helping the physically disabled. It has provided wheelchairs to paraplegics, giving them greater mobility and autonomy.

Thanks to such help, Nasreen Sajwara, a young woman from Kasur district, was received a gold medal for her sewing work from Punjab's Governor.

Milap is currently operating in three districts of Punjab province: Sheikhupura, Kasur and Lahore.
