The Russian president inked the last economic and trade deals in Italy before flying off to Greece. His reasons to visit Rome and the Vatican largely reflect Russia’s eternal fear of encirclement and its quest for ‘warm’ waters.
Gazprom cuts gas production
The economic crisis, lower industrial output and a warmer than usual fall have reduced European energy demands. This might lead to lower investments with the risk that production might prove insufficient in a few years.

Turkey, Israel, Greece and Russia mobilising over Cyprus gas
Tensions are rising rapidly in the eastern Mediterranean following the discovery of oil and gas around the island of Cyprus, whose northern part is occupied by Turkey. Cyprus and Israel, which recently discovered gas near Lebanese waters, sign a cooperation agreement. As Turkey protests, Russia sends ships on a three-month trip to the area.

Two-year delay in opening of South Stream gas pipeline from Russia to Italy
The opening is planned for 2015, while estimated costs are rising, which could make Gazprom back out. Experts: the purposes are in part political, in order to bypass Ukraine and weaken the European project for the Nabucco gas pipeline from the Caspian Sea to Austria.

Last week premier Putin signed various deals with Ulaan Baatar. Russia’s real target appears to be uranium reserves and to draw the nation into it’s sphere of influence. Mongolia matins a balance in its’ relationship with China, Russia and other powers.

Abbot of Mount Athos arrested. War of influence between Moscow and the Ecumenical Patriarchate
Abbot Ephrem is under arrest since 24 December after his return from the tour in Russia, with the relic of the Virgin's belt. Moscow denounces judicial persecution, but he is a controversial figure who has made various attempts to distance himself from Constantinople.
