If society does not recognise God, it cannot do what is good for mankind
In the address with which he inaugurated the 5th General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, Benedict XVI drew an outline of the path today’s Church must follow. Evangelising every culture and bearing witness to Jesus is a mission for all Christians.

Pope: Church has “irresistible missionary power”, no proselytism
Celebrating Mass to mark the opening of the Fifth General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Bishops' Conferences, Benedict XVI restated the role played by faith in the continent. Looking to the heavenly Jerusalem does not mean distancing oneself from the realities in the world. The family is at the heart of the mission of the Church.

Pope tells priests to always have a missionary fervour in their hearts
As he recites the Rosary with priests, men and women religious, seminarians and deacons, Benedict XVI asserts that the witness of a well lived priestly life brings nobility to the Church, calls for admiration among the faithful, is a source of blessing for the community, is the best way to promote vocations, and is the most authentic way to invite other young people to respond affirmatively to the Lord’s calling. He affectionately greets all the families around the world.

Teach the faith and Christian morality in this age of “of worrying disorientation,” says Pope
Benedict XVI tells Brazil’s 400 bishops what are the priorities of their ministry. Starting with the defence of marriage and family which are under attack by some laws, the Church is called to make a missionary effort, promote pastoral initiatives in favour of the poor and the disinherited and social initiatives respectful of the Church’s social doctrine.

Only from God does true revolution come, says Pope
In a ceremony before a crowd of more than a million people, Benedict XVI proclaims the first Brazilian-born saint. The Eucharist which unites God to man makes Catholics “bearers of that peace which the world cannot give,” gives orientation and content to social pastoral initiatives, and offers the world “transparent lives, clear souls, pure minds that refuse to be perceived as mere objects of pleasure.”

Pope: Youth, do not waste your life; build a just and fraternal society
The pope dwelt upon the need for solid formation so as not to fall prey to materialism and secularism but rather to bear witness to one’s peers and in work and study environments. “Respect” for marriage was underlined – there will be no happiness without chastity and fidelity – and for elderly people and nature.

Pro-abortion politicians should not go to communion, says Pope
Benedict XVI reiterates penalty provided for by Canon Law, saying that “putting the innocent to death is not compatible with receiving communion, which is to receive the body of Christ.” Vatican spokesman explains that since “Mexican bishops have not announced the excommunication of anyone”; “it's not that the pope wants to do so”.

Pope: May month of Mary allow us to rediscover key task of announcing Gospel
On the eve of his departure for Brazil, Benedict XVI called for prayers for the successful outcome of his journey and especially for the Fifth Conference of the Latin American Bishops, which he will open.
