    Indian elections: for the first time former Bangladeshi enclaves vote


    Elections were held yesterday in West Bengal and Assam. Some 50,000 enclave residents voted for the first time, including a 103-year-old man who hopes to see hospital in his neighbourhood. Established in the 18th century, the enclaves remained in a legal limbo until last year. Until then, residents were stateless without access to social services or health care.

    ‘Holy Mother of God’ parish church is located in Talasari, in the heart of the Adivasi mission. During the celebration, the archbishop of Vasai confirmed 260 children and adults. “Our brothers and sisters are quite well settled as solid Christians,” Mgr Machado said. They will be the “the solid leaders of tomorrow”.

    Persecuted journalist talks about the pain of having to leave his country to save his life

In Pakistan he used to tell the stories of the Christian minority, persecuted for their faith. He had to run when Islamic extremists threatened to kill his family. With the help of AsiaNews and Jesuit Fathers, he now lives and works in Venice.

    Pope: only Jesus can console the tears of sorrow of the world, "an ocean of desolation"


    Francis led a prayer vigil “to dry the tears” of all those in need of consolation. One of the witnesses who spoke was Qaiser Felix, a Pakistani journalist who works for AsiaNews. During his address, he said that he had to leave his country because he is Catholic and fundamentalist Muslims threatened his family.

Meanwhile, Salesians continue to pray, hold Masses and perform Eucharistic adorations for the kidnapped clergyman.

    Led by their Archbishop, the protesters are asking the president who will be elected on 9 May to dismantle all polluting power plants in the country. Msgr. Arguelles: "We are in the middle of a planetary emergency. We only use fossil fuels”. The energy needs of the nation are great, some areas there without power for 4-5 hours a day. Regional superior: "We hope that there is power at least on election day."

Source tells AsiaNews that Jihadi group’s greater activity has been facilitated by the election campaign for the governorship in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. Militants are a “tool of political propaganda”. The region has one of the most corrupt governments in the country, and “has dealings with Jihadis”.

    Sisters Marianne and Margaret, a life on a mission for lepers, quietly


    The two Austrian nuns spent 40 years on Sorok Island as nurses in a sanatorium for Hansen's disease patients. Despite a climate of fear and marginalisation, they treated patients trying to restore their dignity. Old and fearing they might become a burden on their hospital, they left, quietly. After they were invited for a final farewell, many of the children and grandchildren of the 6,000 patients hoped to see them.
