Baghdad (AsiaNews / Agencies) – The death toll from a series of bomb attacks in Iraq today is 41 dead and over 150 injured. The first attack in Mosul, the second most important city in the country, 390 km north of the capital. Two others in Baghdad, where terrorists targeted workers waiting for the working day to begin.
Two trucks loaded with explosives killed 25 people - more than 70 wounded - in the village of Khazna, 20 km north of Mosul. The explosion razed to the ground about 30 buildings. Bomb attacks and targeted killings are an every day reality in Mosul, where there is an ongoing struggle between Arabs and Kurds to gain power.
Instead in Baghdad, two separate bombings hit the capital in predominantly Shiite areas. The toll from the attack is 16 dead and eighty wounded. The first bomb exploded in the district of Hay al-Amel, west of the capital. The second struck the Shurta Arba area, north of the city. In both cases, the bombs, exploded in the early hours of the morning, targeting workers from two different sites, waiting to begin their shift.
Today’s attacks are only the latest in a long string of blood letting that has marked Iraq since June, when the U.S. Army entrusted the monitoring of security to Iraqi troops and police units. On 7 August a series of attacks, also in Baghdad and Mosul, struck the Shiite community, killing 47 people.
