New York City (AsiaNews / Agencies) - China, India, Brazil and other emerging powers
reveal a growing economic weight (and not only) at the UN. The General Assembly of the United Nations
adopted in fact an increase of 5%
for the 2012-2013 budget, set at 5.4 billion dollars. In contrast,
countries such as Great Britain, Germany,
France and Japan have reduced their contributions, burdened by the global
economic crisis.
The portion allocated to finance the United Nations is based on the GDP of each Member State. Under the new agreement, China will pay 61% more, bringing its contribution from 3.2% to 5.1%. In this way, Beijing has overtaken Canada and
Italy, making it the sixth largest supporter of
the UN.
India will give 24%
more, increasing its contribution
from 0.5 to 0.66%. Brazil has granted an
increase of 82%, paying 2.9% of
the budget instead of 1,
6%. Russia has also increased its share with
52%.
According to some analysts, this agreement indicates a change in the international balance of power, which in the
future will see an increasing
weight of the emerging powers of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia,
India, China, South Africa) at the expense of European countries.
Of the total budget, 566.48 million
dollars will fund 33 special missions, some of them in Syria, Yemen, Libya, Sudan,
Afghanistan and Iraq.
