Tsunami death toll now in 170,000-182,000 range

Jakarta (AsiaNews/Agencies) - The official death toll from the December 26 tsunami ranges from 173,324 to 182,340, according to latest statistics released today.

The number of missing ranges from 107,853 to 129,897 - with most presumed dead.

Death tolls by country were:

Indonesia: 125,596-127,420 dead; 94,550-116,368 missing.

Sri Lanka: 31,003-38,195 dead; 4,698-4,924 missing.

India: 10,779 dead; 5,614 missing.

Thailand: 5,395 dead; 2,991 missing.

Somalia: 298

Myanmar: 90

Maldives: 82

Malaysia: 68

Tanzania: 10

Bangladesh: 2

Kenya: 1

Indonesia's National Disaster Relief Co-ordinating Board is reporting the death toll in the country at 125,596, with 94,550 missing.

The Social Affairs Ministry has said the death toll is 127,420 with 116,368 missing. The government has not explained the discrepancy.

Sri Lanka's National Disaster Management Center is reporting the death toll at 31,003; the Public Security Ministry says it is 38,195. Both agencies say their figures are correct, but neither could explain the discrepancy.
