Tokyo (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The earthquake that struck Chile yesterday
has caused a small tsunami in northern Japan, where tidal waves were registered
this morning. The area is the same one hit in 2011 by a disastrous tsunami that
claimed more than 18 thousand lives and provoked a nuclear accident in
Fukushima. The authorities have issued a warning, claiming that waves more than
1 meter over the norm could hit the coastal areas. So far, they have not exceeded
20 cm .
The quake - a magnitude 8.2 - caused a tsunami yesterday on the coasts of
Chile, the highest waves , measuring over 2 meters, hit Iquique (about 1,800
kilometers north of Santiago). 6 are confirmed dead , while the government reports
that more than 900 thousand people have been evacuated along the 3 thousand
kilometers of coastline during the tsunami alert, which was later recalled.
Indonesia and Papua New Guinea have also been closely monitoring the situation overnight
for a possible tsunami.
