A "reprehensible and incomprehensible" decision, says John
Dayal, secretary general
of the All India Christian
Council (AICC), commenting to AsiaNews on the decision of the Indira Gandhi
Open University in New Delhi to close the chair on health, education and
social work named after Mother Teresa.
The chair is being closed due to lack of funds, along with another one sponsored
by India Space Organization.
The university administration, according to the Vice-Chancellor M.
Aslam, "has decided to continue
the chairs sponsored by outside agencies and not
using faculty funds".
The chair named after Mother Teresa was created with
a Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) between the Bishops'
Conference of India (CBCI)
and the University on 29
February 2000. On 22 April 2009, the CBCI has
signed a new Mou, in which it
expanded the provision of training
through research and development in the areas of HIV / AIDS,
family education, substance abuse
and philosophy.
