Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) – In recent months China has been shocked by child abuse cases in pre-schools.
In the past two years, at least 69 pre-school teachers and employees have been arrested and 77 have been put on trial for child abuse.
An official with the Supreme People's Procuratorate said that poor management and the lack of employee training and qualifications are to blame for the high number of child abuse incidents.
Police detained a 22-year-old teacher after needle marks were found on at least eight children attending a Beijing nursery school run by New York-listed RYB Education Inc. in late November.
Previously, five teachers at a Shanghai facility were arrested on 13 December after videos of teachers slapping and shoving children emerged in early November.
The prosecutor didn’t offer details of incidents that lead to arrests or say how many of the 77 who went on trial were convicted.
Police and prosecutors have not shared much information on cases linked to preschool abuse until now, and the public has been largely left in the dark, leaving it to media to break the silence.
In one case, four pre-school teachers were arrested in early 2016 and later sentenced to two and half years in prison after needle wounds were found on 28 toddlers at another school run by RYB Education in the city of Siping in Jilin province.
