Jakarta (AsiaNews) - The police in Riau, central Sumatra, this morning thwarted a terrorist attack on their Pekanbaru headquarters. National police spokesman Gen. Setyo Wasisto reported that the officers killed four of the gunmen, while one was arrested.
A group of five terrorists broke into the police facility around 9 am on board a minivan, which forced the perimeter of security barriers. They wore masks and, once they got out of the car, armed with machetes they attacked anyone who was nearby, killing a police officer and injuring another. Their colleagues responded promptly to the attack, opening fire on the terrorists and shooting four of them dead. The commando driver tried to escape, but was later arrested and is now in prison.
