Jakarta (AsiaNews) - The police in Riau, central Sumatra, this morning thwarted a terrorist attack on their Pekanbaru headquarters.  National police spokesman Gen. Setyo Wasisto reported that the officers killed four of the gunmen, while one was arrested.

A group of five terrorists broke into the police facility around 9 am on board a minivan, which forced the perimeter of security barriers. They wore masks and, once they got out of the car, armed with machetes they attacked anyone who was nearby, killing a police officer and injuring another. Their colleagues responded promptly to the attack, opening fire on the terrorists and shooting four of them dead. The commando driver tried to escape, but was later arrested and is now in prison.

After the Christian minority, victim of a series of attacks in Surabaya, the Indonesian security forces are once again targeted by terrorists. Today's attack follows one two days ago at the police headquarters, also in the provincial capital of East Java.

On board two motorcycles, the members of one family blew themselves up in front of the building, injuring six people. Yesterday, a shootout took place in Surabaya between the police and a group of terrorists. One of them died during the gun battle. On the same day, two suspected terrorists died in the North Sumatera province during a police operation and others were arrested.

South Sumatera police chief inspector, Gen. Zulkarnain Adinegara, reveals that the police have arrested two suspected terrorists. A few days ago, they wanted to support the detainees revolt in the detention center at the headquarters of the National Police Mobile Brigade (Mako Brimob) in Kelapa Dua, Depok regency (West Java). However, when the troubles were over, they both returned to their home in Palembang to consult with their "mentor". Interrogations of the two suspects have revealed that the latter is an employee of a state-owned company in Riau. He is believed to finance and plan operations.

Hours earlier, two other suspected terrorists had been arrested in Sukabumi and Cianjur (West Java). Police found quantities of radical material in their apartments.
