Nuncio Msgr. Diquattro only to arrive in Nepal in coming days

Rome (AsiaNews) - Mgr. Giambattista Diquattro, nuncio to India and Nepal, will travel to the Himalayan country only in the coming days. He asks us to publish his letter, following serious mistakes contained in the article of 12 June 2018, by the correspondent of AsiaNews in Nepal.

Reverend Father Bernardo Cervellera,

I read with disappointment the article “Nuncio calls on Caritas Nepal to speed up post-quake reconstruction” by Christopher Sharma, dated today 12 June 2018.

In it, it is reported that during a recent visit of mine to Nepal, I supervised the rehabilitation and reconstruction works, I visited the areas afflicted by the earthquake and I asked the Caritas office to extend its ways of support. The words of the title are not explicitly reported in the same article.

I wish to inform you that my only visit to Nepal was from 3 to 8 June 2017, and later I did not go again. I am planning to visit the Country in the next days. I have not made therefore, recent visits in Nepal.

During my visit in Nepal (3-8 June 2017), I was engaged with the first contacts for the beginning of my mission in that Country, and I did not supervise any rehabilitation and reconstruction works, also because it is not my duty to do so; and even less I spoke about activities of reconstruction.

I esteem and appreciate your activity and your missionary commitment, and for this reason I ask you to publish this letter of mine, even in the English edition (English text enclosed), for a due act towards your Readers, among which I enclose myself as well.

With sincere regards and in communion of prayer.

Archbishop Giambattista Diquattro

Apostolic Nuncio to Nepal
