Human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang is alive

His wife received confirmation that he is alive. Wang Quanzhang was arrested in 2015 as part of the government’s crackdown against human rights lawyers, the so-called "709 group". Since then, nothing had been heard of him.

Beijing (AsiaNews) – The wife of human rights lawyer Wang Quanzhang has received confirmation from a reliable source that her husband, who has not been heard of for three years, is alive.

Yesterday, Li Wenzu was told her that a lawyer was able to meet her husband. The lawyer reported that " his body is normal, and his mind is normal."

Li Wenzu has always asked for her husband’s release. In April, she attempted to march 100 kilometres to draw attention to her husband’s situation, before her efforts were interrupted by the police.

She visited the complaints office of the Supreme People’s Court. “Quanzhang, waiting for you to come home and eat dumplings!” she wrote on Twitter.

The police arrested Wang in 2015 in a crackdown against the so-called "709 group” on charges of “inciting subversion of state power”.

As a lawyer, he worked for the Fengrui law firm in Beijing. Some of his colleagues were also arrested and subjected to humiliations as well as physical and psychological torture

Later, the authorities released some lawyers, like Wang Yu, after they were forced to admit their guilt on television.
