A 'pained' Kim Jong-un visits victims of a car accident

32 Chinese and four North Koreans died in a bus that crashed from a bridge. Kim went to the Chinese embassy to offer condolences and to the hospital. It is unusual for the news of an accident to make headlines North Korea. "Low key” also adopted by South Korea and Washington: joint military exercises reduced to a minimum.

Seoul (AsiaNews / Agencies) - A Kim Jong-un in a white coat, saddened by the death of 32 Chinese tourists and four North Korean citizens in an accident, holds the hand of a Chinese citizen, on the hospital bed.

These are the "new clothes" that the North Korean leader has been trying on to promote for months: he opens the country to the South and the world, promises to renounce nuclear arms, receives officials first-person and in three days will shake hands with the South Korean president Moon Jae-in live on television.

Two nights ago, a bus crashed from a bridge in the northern province of Hwanghae. Kim "could not control his grief" for the suffering of family members who lost their loved ones, and was quick to offer her condolences to the embassy of China, his main ally (80% of tourists who visit North Korea are Chinese).

It is unusual for such news to make headlines in North Korea, where the media is strictly controlled and the negative news filtered, especially considering that Kim himself recognized the accident.

Meanwhile, Pyongyang is not the only one to try a new image approach in view of the upcoming summits with Moon and US President Donald Trump. The joint military exercises that are held each year between the American and South Korean armies have been postponed, controlled, scaled down and certainly "low key". Behind the choice there is the "diplomatic bet" of Moon, who has been looking for dialogue with the near North since he came to power.
