Yangon (AsiaNews) – Aung San Suu Kyi is due to be placed under detention once more, reports the dissident Burmese daily Mizzima News, citing sources close to military circles. The Nobel Peace Prize winner, currently being tried in prison, will be confined to “a military base on the outskirts of Yangon”.
The anonymous source quoted by Mizzima News explains that “is getting ready to isolate Aung San Suu Kyi in a house in the Ye Mon suburb”, where the “11th Light Infantry Division” is based.
The leader of the National League for Democracy – who until Mat 26th was under house arrest in her home on University Road, Yangon – risks five years in prison because of 53 year-old American John Yettaw’s intrusion on her property. Aung San Suu Kyi’s lawyers add that among the laws being cited to imprison her is the 1975 Constitution, which however, no longer has legal value because it was abrogated by Than Shwe and his military junta in 1988, when they claimed power.
The trial continues against the National League for Democracy (Nld) leader – currently held in Insein prison – but the junta “has already decided to condemn her to detention”, to prevent her from running in political elections due to be held in 2010.
AsiaNews sources in Myanmar report that an email is being circulated in the country, in which an anonymous Burmese student has written to the military junta in Aung San Suu Kyi’s name. The obviously ironic letter, thanks “the ingenuous general Than Shwe” because “the world had forgotten about my situation” because it was preoccupied “with economic and financial problems”. “I was imprisoned in my house – the email reads – with only my two assistants for company and I was ill. I thank you for helping me to meet the world again; I am sorry though, that in this drama you play the part of the “bad guy”, and that because of me people hate you”.
Inspired by the Burmese Generals passion for cinema, the email concludes that “you orchestrated a set up - John Yettaw’s trespass on Aung San Suu Kyi’s property, ed – to justify my arrest” and “you tried to make people believe that we were lovers” when it is well known that “my house is the most watched house in all of Myanmar, under 24 hour military surveillance, and it is impossible to enter”.
The AsiaNews source also denounces a clamping down on media and internet, with strict controls throughout the nation.
