Beijing fires "Tibetan bulldog", Zhang Qingli.

The Communist Party secretary in Lhasa was replaced by Chen Quanguo, considered a "man of dialogue". In the more than 5 years of control over the region Zhang has caused riots and sentenced hundreds of Tibetan dissidents and Buddhist leaders.
Lhasa (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The Central Committee of Communist Party of China has replaced Zhang Qingli, secretary of the CPC in Tibet considered the "bulldog" in the region. Known for his uncompromising position not only on the Dalai Lama, but right across the Tibetan ethnic group, Zhang is considered responsible for the violent clashes that occurred in the region under his rule. He will replaced by Quanguo Chen, considered a man of dialogue.

Zhang’s removal was announced Aug. 25 by the Xinhua agency, which however gives no reasons for the move, nor does it reveal where Zhang will be moved to. Since taking office in May 2006, Zhang has carried out very aggressive ethnic politics and almost always granted local police powers to use force to stop demonstrations and protests.

The major crisis was addressed in 2008, when - led by peacefully marching monks - tens of thousands of Tibetans took to the streets to protest against the Beijing government and violence in the region. Zhang sent the army in riot gear to quell the situation: hundreds of people died in the streets. Since then, his government has issued harsh judgments against all alleged perpetrators of violence, of course, all Tibetans.

He also had a very bad relationship with the Dalai Lama, whom he described as "a wolf in monk’s clothes" and accused of "fomenting a violent clique with the aim of overthrowing the legitimate government of Tibet". Above all, these definitions have resulted in the anger of the local population, which has never abandoned its dream of seeing the religious leader return home.
