Card Raï's appeals to Aoun and Hariri: find 'agreement' avoid 'collapse'

The Maronite primate appeals parties overcome the "logic of partisan interests.” The government needs "truly independent specialists with a national conscience". Rising above quotas, to act "in the interest of Lebanon". But the Christian leader Geagea calls for early elections.

Beirut (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Lebanon and its political and ruling class must "overcome the logic of partisan interests", to arrive at the formation of a government of "truly independent specialists with a national conscience".

This is the appeal launched yesterday, in the Sunday mass homily delivered in the patriarchal see of Bkerké, by the Maronite primate Card Beshara Raï who returns to lash the leaders of the country. Addressing the president Michel Aoun and the prime minister in charge Saad Hariri, the cardinal underlined the need for an "agreement".

In the mass at the beginning of the year, Card Raï called it a "shame" to start the year without a new executive. “Shirking responsibility for the failure of the government - added the cardinal yesterday - does not help. The solution is not without risks and all these risks represent nothing in the face of the hypothesis of a total collapse.”

For the head of the Maronite Church, an agreement is possible between the two political leaders, if both are able to ignore "the pressure", go beyond "the logic of the division of quotas and portfolios" and act "in the interest of Lebanon". In these hours the cautious optimism that permeated local politics before Christmas seems to be wavering, as it seemed possible - if not probable - an agreement on the new executive and today we are again "at the starting point".

Meanwhile, the Maronite leader Samir Geagea, head of the Lebanese Forces and one of the main antagonists of President Aoun in the Christian field, feared the scenario of early elections as "the only way out of the crisis".
