Card Re: Let us pray to God, that He may end the pandemic

In the absence of Pope Francis, the Dean of Cardinals celebrated the Mass of “the Lord’s Supper” at St Peter's Basilica. The ceremony, held in the afternoon, did not include the washing of the feet, due to anti-epidemic regulations. For the same reason, no adoration of the Eucharist took place.

Vatican City (AsiaNews) – Holy Thursday is linked to the memory of the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist, a gift that “only one God could conceive” and “only an infinite power and love could implement,” said Card Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals.

The prelate led the Mass of “the Lord's Supper” at the Altar of the Chair, in St Peter's Basilica, which commemorates the institution of the priesthood, during which the rite of washing of the feet traditionally takes place.

As announced, Pope Francis was absent from the service. No reasons were given, but it was probably motivated by a desire not to tire the Pope who celebrated the long Chrism mass this morning. During the liturgy, the pontiff did however appear fit.

In the afternoon celebration, the washing of the feet was not performed, due to anti-epidemic regulations. For the same reason, there was no adoration of the Eucharist. Instead, Card Re urged the faithful to pray.

“In order for this tragedy to end,” the cardinal said, “we must use every human means that science can make available to us, but we need another indispensable tool, namely a great choral prayer that God's hand may come to our aid and put an end to this tragic situation that has worrying consequences in terms of health, work, the economy, education and direct relations with people. As Christ himself taught us, it is necessary to go and knock loudly on the door of God, the Father Almighty”. (FP)
