Dhaka: Bishop D'Rozario, "defender of female education ", has died

Msgr. Michael A. D'Rozario was the bishop of Khulna for 35 years, the third largest city of Bangladesh, where Catholics are 0.2%. A great educator and writer, he founded more than 11 schools, pushing women to attend courses. Yesterday, his funeral in Dhaka, attended by thousands of people. The final farewell in Khulna today where he will be buried.

Dhaka (AsiaNews) - Msgr. Michael A. D'Rozario, Bishop Emeritus and leading figure of the Bangladeshi Catholicism died yesterday at age 91. For 35 years, he was bishop of the diocese of Khulna (third largest city of Bangladesh, south-west of Dhaka) and contributed to the development of the local faith with many publications and translations of papal letters. Msgr. D'Rozario died in a hospital in the capital, where he was hospitalized for weeks for diseases linked to old age.

"People will remember him for his leadership - says local priest Fr. Noren Baidy - the bishop was able to give great impetus to the Church, increasing the number of faithful and founding more than 11 schools. " "In addition – adds Fr. Baidy – he contributed greatly to the education of women, always defending their right to go to school ".

Msgr. D'Rozario was the second bishop of Khulna. A native of Dhaka, he was born in the parish of Hasnabad on November 23, 1925. Ordained a priest on July 10, 1953, he was appointed bishop in 1970, choosing the motto "The Lord is my light" (Ps 27: 1). The faithful of the diocese of Khulna (16 million inhabitants) particularly remember his ongoing commitment to the inhabitants of the region, for Catholics (0.2% of the population) and for non-Catholics.

A great educator and analyst – he wrote many articles for Catholic catechetical magazines- the bishop was the first in Bangladesh to establish the annual Diocesan Assembly (an idea later adopted by all the other dioceses), where Msgr. D'Rozario could confront faithful, priests and religious and lay to lay out the objectives to be achieved.

The bishop of Khulna was also entrusted with the task of translating much of the pastoral letters from popes to the Bangladeshi community.

Yesterday, the funeral of Msgr. D'Rozario was held in Dhaka, with the presence of thousands of faithful. Today a further memorial celebration will be officiated in the Cathedral of St. Joseph Khulna, where he will be buried, as requested by the bishop himself.
