Easter in Sri Lanka: From darkness to light, from division to peace

by Melani Manel Perera
Easter message of the Bishops Conference. The problems of refugees, poverty, the upcoming elections. The proposal to change life, following "the path of acceptance and reconciliation."

Colombo (AsiaNews) - " The Passover of Jesus from death to life should lead us to Passover from darkness to light and from divisiveness to unity and peace.” This is the central message of Easter hope that the bishops of Sri Lanka have entrusted to all Catholics and people of the country that is emerging from almost 30 years of war between the government and the Tamil guerrillas.

The message was signed by Mgr. Vianney Fermando and Mgr. Norbert M. Andrade, respectively president and secretary general of the Episcopal Conference. The bishops note that "although we have seen the end of the war, there is still hope to achieve the long and arduous road towards a permanent peace. Among the challenges are: "the presence of refugees [internally displaced people, IDPs] and returned refugees, who deserve care and attention". The "many [who] are struggling to make ends meet, given the rising price of consumer goods", the "general elections and the many promises”, which should take place on April 8.

The bishops point out that although "we all experience death every day in different forms, ... Easter is a transition to a new life" and ask all people to "follow the path of acceptance and reconciliation," abandoning "a life lived in hatred and suspicion. "

Citing the story of the disciples of Emmaus, comforted by the presence of the Lord, they conclude by recalling that "God is with us ... especially when we are distressed and confused, when life seems increasingly heavy."
