Filipino bishop: "Poverty leads to fewer vocations"
by Santosh Digal

The bishop of Dumaguete, Mgr Du, said poverty and not enough promotion of priestly life were to blame for a drop in vocations.

Manila (AsiaNews) – Poverty is "one of the main causes of the drop in priestly vocations among youth in the Philippines", according to the bishop of the southern diocese of Dumaguete.

Mgr John Du told AsiaNews: "We are seeing a diminishing interest in vocations among youth. I think poverty is one major cause of the problem." He continued: "There are people who are willing to support seminarians, but sometimes there are no seminarians to support."

Apart from poverty, a "serious problem" is "lack of promotion of the priesthood. Although there are people assigned to this particular work, still it is not enough."

In the diocese, only six seminarians are in the Theologate while 39 are in college and there are only 81 priests. Mgr Du said: "Despite these figures, the perception of the people about the Church is generally positive. I hope that this will help the renewal of our mission."

What is the true good of the Church in China
by Card. Joseph Zen Ze-kiunOn the eve of an important meeting in Rome on "Jesus our contemporary," Card. Zen asks all Catholics to help the Church in China (and especially its legitimate bishops) to emerge from ambiguity, to follow Benedict XVI and "rid" themselves of those organisms that are enemies of the faith (see PA, Bureau of Religious Affairs, etc. .), and that control and stifle the faithful. The Chinese Church is on the verge of a schism caused by "bargaining" between the Catholic faith and political power. The subtitle of this article (wanted by the author) is: "In dialogue with the Community of Saint Egidio and Gianni Valente of 30Days".

Msgr. Savio Hon: Freedom for arrested bishops and priests, is also good for China
by Bernardo CervelleraEven if the government does not give answers or to the Holy See, or diplomats, or to friends of the Vatican and China, it is important that "no one forgets about them." The Chinese government's official response when asked is always: "We do not know." "We need to pray first," "but we must also appeal to those who are holding them."
