Flying prayers for Thai Buddhists

Thai Airways International is offering a special flight for passengers who want to chant Buddhist mantras over 99 Thai holy sites in Thailand on 30 November.

Bangkok (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Thai Airways International (THAI) is offering a special flight for passengers who want to chant Buddhist mantras over 99 holy sites in the kingdom on 30 November.

Wiwat Piyawiroj, executive vice president for THAI's commercial operations, said the special flight is part of a programme aimed at boosting the tourism sector. The New Travel Experience programme is part of THAI's Magical Flying Experience campaign.

Wiwat explained that passengers will be able to fly over the 99 holy sites in the capital and 31 provinces, chanting mantras.

The list of sites includes Chon Buri, Rayong, Surat Thani, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Nakhon Pathom, Suphan Buri, Ayutthaya, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Chaiyaphum and Nakhon Ratchasima, for.

"There will be no landing during the flight and passengers will receive positive energy from chanting while onboard," he explained.

The three-hour flight will take off from Suvarnabhumi airport at 1.30 pm and return at 4.30 pm on 30 November.

People interested in booking a seat can expect to pay about 10,000 baht (US$ 325) in business class and about 6,000 baht (US$ 195) in economy. Sales will continue until 25 November.

The initiative has not gone down well with Srisuwan Janya, general secretary of the Association for the Protection of the Thai Constitution, who plans to lead THAI workers' union members to file a complaint at Government House against the company over its recovery plan.

He said workers want to expose the irregularities in the company’s recovery plan to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

In late June, THAI’s debt stood at 332.2 billion baht (about US$ 10.7 billion). The recovery plan was approved by the Central Bankruptcy Court on 14 September.
