New York (AsiaNews) - Among Asians, the Chinese occupy the highest positions in the ranking of the richest in the world. This is shown by the ranking published by Forbes magazine, which lists the world’s richest people. China has the second highest number of billionaires, after the United States, with 319 billionaires. Among self-made women billionaires, Asians excel.

The richest Asian, positioned in 18th place, is the Chinese Wang Jianlin with a wealth of 31.3 billion dollars, followed by Li Ka-shing, Hong Kong, with 31.2 billion. His countryman Lee Shau-kee was ranked 32nd place with 24.4 billion. The founder of Alibaba, Jack Ma, whose group owns the South China Morning Post, ranked 23rd with 28.3 billion dollars.

Overall, there are 227 female billionaires, mostly heiresses. Only 15 of these have built their wealth on their own, and are mostly from Asian countries: among them, the Vietnamese Nguyen Thi Thao Phuon, founder of  the low-cost airline, VietJet.

According to Forbes, the number of billionaires has grown steeply in the last year, with an increase of 13%, the largest increase since the magazine began to compile the rankings 31 years ago.

For the fourth time in a row, the first place is occupied by billionaire Bill Gates, while surprisingly it also reveals a "Donal Trump slide" of 200 positions: for Forbes, this is due to the weakening of the real estate market of Manhattan, whereas 40% the wealth of the US president is linked to the Trump Tower and the eight buildings that surround it in the space of a mile.
