VATICAN – ASIA
From the social doctrine of the Church, direction and lines of action to face Asia’s new challenge
This is the goal of the conference organised by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace that will be held in Bangkok from January 25 to the 27.

Vatican City (AsiaNews) – The challenges that the peoples of Asia face today, challenges like the new poverty and terrorist violence, the search for success at all cost and the effects of an accelerating but imbalanced economic growth, as seen through the social doctrine of the Church are at the heart of an Asia-wide conference that will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from January 25 to the 27.

The meeting, which is promoted by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences and the Bishops’ Conference of Thailand, will present the Social Doctrine of the Church as a tool that offers direction and lines of action to face the new challenges in the search of a balance that would ensure the continent justice and peace.

The conference will be held at the Baan Phu Waan Pastoral Training Center in Sampran, near the Thai capital. Cardinal Renato Raffaele Martino, President of the Vatican dicastery, will commence the conference. Card Michael Michai Kitbunchu, Archbishop of Bangkok, and Archbishop Orlando B. Quevedo, President of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences, will offer inaugural greetings.

Speakers will address ecclesial, socio-economic, socio-political, family-related and international issues. They include Prof Felix Wilfred, head of Christian Studies at the University of Madras in India; Lina Chan, Secretary General of Hong Kong’s Commission Justice and Peace; Indian mass media expert Allwyn Fernandes; Wendy Louis, Director of the Pastoral Institute of Singapore and at least 16 presidents of Asian bishops’ conferences from Bangladesh, Hong Kong and Indonesia to Korea, Japan, India, Mongolia, Pakistan, Vietnam, Philippines.

What is the true good of the Church in China
by Card. Joseph Zen Ze-kiunOn the eve of an important meeting in Rome on "Jesus our contemporary," Card. Zen asks all Catholics to help the Church in China (and especially its legitimate bishops) to emerge from ambiguity, to follow Benedict XVI and "rid" themselves of those organisms that are enemies of the faith (see PA, Bureau of Religious Affairs, etc. .), and that control and stifle the faithful. The Chinese Church is on the verge of a schism caused by "bargaining" between the Catholic faith and political power. The subtitle of this article (wanted by the author) is: "In dialogue with the Community of Saint Egidio and Gianni Valente of 30Days".

Msgr. Savio Hon: Freedom for arrested bishops and priests, is also good for China
by Bernardo CervelleraEven if the government does not give answers or to the Holy See, or diplomats, or to friends of the Vatican and China, it is important that "no one forgets about them." The Chinese government's official response when asked is always: "We do not know." "We need to pray first," "but we must also appeal to those who are holding them."
