Gusts of 214 km / h: After Japan, typhoon Haishen hits the Korean peninsula

The cyclone is lashing the east coast of South Korea. Two million people evacuated on Japanese territory. The North Korean regime deploys thousands of workers' party members to tackle emergency.

Seoul (AsiaNews) - After lashing southern Japan with gusts of up to 214 km / h, the powerful typhoon Haishen has hit the east coast of South Korea. Over 5 thousand homes in the southern part of the Korean peninsula have been left without electricity; South Korean authorities have so far evacuated 1,000 people and cancelled 300 flights.

In Ulsan, the city most affected along with Busan, Hyundai has had to shut down operations in its large car manufacturing plant. The intensity of the typhoon - the tenth of the season in East Asia - also led to the shutdown of two turbines at the Wolsong nuclear power plant: the plant’s management say no radiation leaks have been detected.

On the Japanese island of Kyushu, there are currently two missing and 52 injured; a power blackout has isolated 440 thousand homes. There was also damage in the prefectures of Nagasaki and Kagoshima. The government evacuated 2 million people and suspended rail transport in areas hit by the typhoon.

Haishen is moving at great speed north to the northeastern provinces of China. In the late evening (local time), the typhoon will hit North Korea, already devastated in recent days by cyclones Bavi and Maysak. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered 12,000 workers' party members to tackle the emergency and help rescue the population. So far, the Pyongyang authorities have not provided data on the number of victims caused by the recent series of typhoons.
