Jammu and Kashmir, Caritas India helps thousands of flood victims
New Delhi (AsiaNews) - Drinking water for 200 families, medical care for 8.000 patients and non-perishable kits for more 2.000 people. These are some of the initiatives offered by Caritas India to the victims of floods that affected Jammu and Kashmir last September. More than 300 people have died in India and Pakistan in mudslides and landslides.
"We have built temporary shelter for 200 families with special canvas tents to safeguard the displaced families from rain and harsh weather", said to AsiaNews Fr. Frederick D'Souza, executive director of Caritas India.
The association has been working in five districts of Pulwama, Kugam, Srinagar, Rajauri and Poonch.
It has supported drinking water to 600 families in Pulwama district, 30 litres per family per day. In terms of medical support, Caritas India along with government and Holy Family Hospital New Delhi and Camellion Task Force conducted medical camps thereby treating about 8.000 patients.
Caritas India also provided 1485 NFI kits and 25.000 chlorine tablets to 14 villages in Phulwama.
