Mother Teresa to be canonised under Benedict XVI, says Sister Nirmala

by Nirmala Carvalho

Kolkata (AsiaNews) – "I am certain that Mother Teresa will be canonised by Pope Benedict XVI," said Sister Nirmala, Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity, who spoke to AsiaNews about the election of the Holy Father.

Sr Nirmala is confident that the process of canonisation will be completed during the new pontificate.

"The new Pope knew Mother Teresa personally, and I'm certain that after the second miracle, Mother will be made a saint," she explained.

As for the election of the new Pontiff, she said that the "new Pope is a holy man and we are very happy about his election. We are not disappointed that an Indian was not elected, because it is God who directed the Cardinal Fathers in the election".

As soon as the result became public, the Superior General gathered her Sisters and the faithful to "celebrate a Thanksgiving mass in the Mother House for his election, followed in the afternoon by additional praying".

Outside the Mother House's prayer room, there is a blackboard on which the nuns wrote: "Congratulations to our new, dearest Holy Father, Benedict XVI".

Sister Nirmala said she was confident "the Missionaries of Charity would continue receiving the Vatican's love and blessings like before."

The nun, who was in Rome during the final stage of John Paul II's illness and took part in the funeral rites, will not be able to attend Benedict XVI's inaugural mass. However, she said that the nuns of the Missionaries of Charity who are in Rome will be present for the inauguration on Sunday.
