Palestinian Christians burn photos of Donald Trump: 'Jerusalem, our land'

On the photos, some slogans: "Move the embassy to your country, not ours". Trump has reportedly telephoned the King of Jordan and Mahmoud Abbas to communicate his intention to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Bethlehem (AsiaNews / Agencies) - A group of Palestinian Christians have burned some photos of Donald Trump staging a protest in anticipation of the possible decision of the US president to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. For days there have been rumors that Trump will move the US embassy from Tel Aviv, the universally recognized capital of Israel, to Jerusalem, claimed as "eternal" capital by the State of Israel. However, the Palestinians look to East Jerusalem as their capital for a future state.

The group gathered near the Nativity Square, in the city where Jesus was born, with signs bearing slogans like: "Move the embassy to your country, not ours"; "Trump: keep your populism out of Jerusalem"; "Jerusalem, the heart of Palestine, is not to be negotiated".

The insistent rumors  have already provoked the criticism of the Arab countries, of the European Union, of various Islamic countries. Yesterday Trump reportedly telephoned the King of Jordan and the leader of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, informing them of his intention.

The US consulate in Jerusalem has ordered its staff and their families to avoid visiting the Old City or the West Bank and advises Americans generally to avoid places where there is substantial military or police presence.
