Patriarch Rai: A weapons-free Lebanon

Security Council meets over attacks on UN peacekeepers in south Lebanon
Tension remains high. The Lebanese government merely "regrets" the incident. Open letter from the Commander of UNIFIL to the inhabitants of the area that aims to calm everyone down, but stresses "freedom of movement of UN peacekeepers”. Hezbollah launches accusations of pro-Israel partisanship.

Maronite Patriarchate warns of “tension rising” to the point of conflict in Lebanon
There is a growing conflict between Prime Minister Saad Hariri and Hezbollah because the UN tribunal allegations that - they say - condemn Hezbollah for having contributed to the assassination of Rafik Hariri. The bishops are preparing to go to Rome for the Synod of the Middle East, but a war between Sunnis and Shiites is feared.

Italian troops start landing in south Lebanon
They are the first 800 soldiers of the multi-national UN force. Islamic countries are being urged to send troops to avoid a solely "European" and "western" UNIFIL force.
