Penang will become strategic crossroads for Malaysian trade

A government project intends to strengthen the NCER area with a series of infrastructure projects designed to favour the circulation of goods. The principal aim is to boost the economy and raise the average pro-capita wage.

Kuala Lumpur (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has declared Penang state as the logistics and transportation hub for the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).

Several major projects would be carried out, including the expansion of Penang Port and the Penang International Airport as well as an integrated terminal for rail, road and sea travel. “With the increase in sophisticated logistics capabilities, the state will strengthen its position as the best logistics and transportation hub for the Indonesia-Malaysia- Thailand Growth Triangle” the prime minister affirmed.

The high-tech sector will also be a focus for private investment with the setting up of the micro-electronics excellence centre to further boost the manufacturing sector.

The Northern Corridor Economic Region development program is a government initiative to accelerate economic growth and elevate income levels in the north of Peninsular Malaysia, encompassing the states of Perlis, Kedah, Penang and the north of Perak.
