Punjab terrorist attack: 12-hour siege claims nine lives

Three terrorists, perhaps trained in Pakistan, attacked a police station and opened fire. New Delhi deployed army and Special Forces to stop the siege. For its part, Pakistan condemns the attack.

Amritsar (AsiaNews/Agencies) - After 12 hours, Indian security forces ended the siege of a police station that was held by a terrorist group, in Punjab near the border with Pakistan.

For now, the death toll is nine people. In addition to three terrorists, three civilians and three Special Forces were killed. Dozens were wounded.

The Government of India has not yet issued any official statement. This is the first terrorist attack in Indian Punjab in the last 13 years.

At about 5 am, three armed men wearing military uniforms broke into the police station at Dinanagar, Gurdaspur district, near the border with Pakistan.

According to early reports, the group arrived on a stolen Maruti Suzuki 800, after opening fire on a bus.

Shortly after the start of the attack, the Indian government dispatched the army, the National Security Guard and rapid response teams to assist the local police.

The siege lasted for so long because India forces wanted to capture at least one of terrorists alive.

Apparently, the three entered India from Pakistan two or three days ago, via Jammu and Kashmir, after they were trained by Lashkar-e-Taiba, a well-known Pakistani terrorist group.

Meanwhile, some people have already blamed Pakistan for today's incident.

In the response, the authorities in Islamabad said, "Pakistan reiterates its condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. We express our warmest condolences to the Government and people of India."
