Relief from the Himalaya for tsunami victims

Deoniya (AsiaNews/UCAN) – Religious and lay Catholics in Nepal are sending relief aid to tsunami victims. For this purpose, a team of Salesian priests and 20 Nepalese artists organised an exhibition at the Don Bosco Centre auditorium in Dharan (a town in south-western Nepal) to raise money for tsunami-stricken south-east Asia. Performers from 10 schools participated in the event, whilst students from another 70 visited the exhibition.

The organisers' efforts were rewarded with 15,000 rupees (€ 159, US$ 210), which were sent to aid Sri Lankans through Caritas Nepal.

Other parishes and Catholic institutions in Nepal set up boxes outside churches and chapels to collect relief funds. St. Francis Xavier's School in Kathmandu provided the largest single amount in the campaign, which raised 800,000 rupees (€ 8,500, US$ 11,200) for the relief and rehabilitation efforts.

Religious from eastern Nepal raised 32,000 rupees (€339, US$ 460) at a regional meeting.

In Deoniya several brothers, priests and nuns who had come together to celebrate the Year of the Eucharist met Mgr Anthony Sharia, Nepal's apostolic prefect.

A majority of them agreed that the Church in Nepal should establish and run a hospital, preferably outside Kathmandu in one of the poorest eastern areas.

A hospital "is needed in Nepal", Loreto Sister Sabrina Rai said; "building one outside Kathmandu would be in line with the local Church's mission of genuine service through a presence in different parts of Nepal." (LF)
