Solidarity among Vietnamese faced by devastation of Cyclone Conson

The fury of the elements invested the provinces of Hai Phong and Thai Binh, between Saturday and Sunday, causing three deaths, 97 homes destroyed, beached boats, felled trees and lampposts and damaged public works.

Ho Chi Minh City (AsiaNews) - Cyclone Conson, which hit central and northern Vietnam on July has set in motion, in addition to official aid, solidarity among the population. The fury of the elements invested the provinces of Hai Phong and Thai Binh, between Saturday and Sunday, causing three deaths, 97 homes destroyed, beached boats, felled trees and lampposts and damaged public works.

The continuous heavy rains have jeopardized two sections of the dam in the town of Thai Do, Thai Thuy district of Thai Binh province. People mobilized quickly, in collaboration with the public authorities, to address the damage caused by the cyclone. Companies that deal with irrigation, for their part, are trying to control the flood waves.

In the northern province of Quang Ninh, has been without electricity few days because of strong winds. Off the coast of Ha Long Bay, 40 people on some boats were saved by rescuers.

For security reasons, the provincial transport department of Quang Ninh has prohibited access to the Bai Chay bridge by bicycle or motorbike.

Conson caused damage and flooding in the capital Hanoi and some neighbouring provinces. The dense rain continues to fall in central and northern areas, causing landslides in several places.

The Vietnam Red Cross (VRC) has collected 4.5 billion dong (nearly 190 thousand Euros) prepared 6 thousand packages of aid, 300 tents and 4 thousand packs of water purification tablets to give aid to people in affected areas.

The provinces of Quang Ninh, Thai Binh and Thanh Hoa are preparing aid. The Red Cross of the provinces of Hai Phong and Nam Dinh for its part has collected 1.3 million dong (nearly 53 thousand euros) to rescue and help the population. The Vietnamese Red Cross has asked for help from the International Red Cross and other relief organisations.
