Taipei, typhoon Nesat and storm Haitang leaves one missing and 131 wounded

First time in 50 years that two typhoons hit the island simultaneously. Over 10,000 people evacuated. Rail services suspended and more than 300 national and international flights canceled. More than 600,000 households without electricity.

Taipei (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The toll from the passage of typhoon Nissi and tropical storm Haitang is one missing person and 131 wounded, according to the statistical bulletin released by the Central Emergency Operations Center today.

Of the 131 wounded, 54 are in Taipei, 52 in Yilan County, 11 in Taichung, 10 in Taoyuan, three in New Taipei City and one in Hsinchu County. Searches are still under way for a man involved in a motorcycle accident in a flooded area near the freeway n. 3 in Pingtung County Nanzhou Township.

Haitang has caused flooding in 279 locations. In 77 the water has already retreated, 202 urban areas remain flooded. The storm cut electricity to 667,046 families. The situation has largely been restored, but there are still 20,587 without electricity.

It is the first time in 50 years for two typhoons to hit Taiwan at almost the same time. To limit damage, authorities have evacuated more than 10,000 people, employing 5,338 soldiers. Between Saturday and Sunday, most rail services have been suspended and more than 300 domestic and international flights have been canceled or delayed
