Terrorist attack on U.S. consulate in Istanbul: 6 dead

Istanbul (AsiaNews) - Three armed individuals have been killed after attacking the American consulate in Istanbul.  A security guard and two Turkish policemen who were guarding the entrance to the diplomatic office were also killed in the shootout.

The identity of the assailants is not yet clear.  Initial conjectures are that they were members of the PKK (the armed clandestine Kurdish party), but others accuse Islamic fundamentalism.

The assault took place this morning at about 10 o'clock (local time).  The three attackers were in a white car, and opened fire after driving up to the main entrance.  The shooting lasted almost 10 minutes, and wounded a number of people.
