The “strength of the Church is within the small churches”, says Laos’s first cardinal
On 21 May, Pope Francis announced his nomination, a surprise for Laos’s 50,000- strong Catholic community. It is a “baby Church” that experiences the first proclamation and is turned towards Tribals and animists. "Some of the most serious problems are the shortage of personnel and the quality of education,” the prelate said. "Some people think that being a cardinal is an honour,” but for Mgr Mangkhanekhoun it means advising the pope on how to “solve problems.”

Laos’s new cardinal: “poverty, suffering and persecution are the three columns that strengthen the Church”
The first Laotian cardinal talks about his election and the life of the Catholic Church in Laos. The latter endures persecution and bears witness to its faith amid many adversities. It has 45,000 members, 20 priests, 98 religious and 218 parishes. The cardinal was a prisoner of the government for three years. “I accepted it, as it was true. They were right, I was ‘promoting’ Jesus. It was a correct accusation,” he said. The government exercises tight controls over religions. Relations between Church and State are difficult. “We can change the government's way of thinking that we are not its enemy."
Bishop of Pakse: My “baby” Church faced with challenges of polygamy
Msgr. Louis-Marie Ling Mangkhanekhoun, pastor of 14,500 faithful, with six priests, evangelizes the people of Pakse in the south of the country to the faith and to the value of the sacraments. In the face of numerous difficulties, the Church is growing and there are many conversions. We must find a journey of faith that helps overcome “contemporary” polygamy (multiple wives) and "consequential" polygamy (many wives one after the other at different times).
Ling Jihua, aide to retired President Hu Jintao, faces prosecution on corruption charges
The politburo accuses Ling of badly harming the party's image and having a "terrible" effect on society. Ling or his family are accused of taking large bribes, and illegally acquiring a large amount of “core secrets”.
Hu Jintao's former top aide Ling Jihua under investigation for corruption
After Zhou Yongkang and Xu Caihou, another top official falls to Xi Jinping's anti-graft drive. This is raising suspicions that the crackdown is part of an internal political struggle. Two of Ling's brothers are also being investigated. His career ended when his son killed himself behind the wheel of a Ferrari. Two young women, one naked and the other half-naked, were found with his half-naked body.
Party paper takes a shot at the leadership of Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao
Study Times, a paper run by the party's central school, lists problems caused by Hu and Wen's 10 years in power: limited political reforms, greater pollution, income disparity and social instability. It also calls for greater democracy. It is not clear whether the article is a final push against current leaders, or a part of the ongoing power struggle for control of the politburo. So far, Jiang Zemin's Shanghai gang is the only winner.
