The Year of Faith in Mongolia: starting from the Catechism

by Joseph Yun Li-sun
The Bishop of Ulaanbaatar, Msgr. Wenceslao Padilla, opened the meeting of the catechists of the country: "It is a key year for all of us. We must bring this challenge to all the parishes to revitalize our mission. "

Ulaanbaatar (AsiaNews) - For the young Church of Mongolia, the Year of Faith "is a challenge and an invitation to share the catechism. This is why now more than ever, Catholic educators are critical." With these words Msgr. Wenceslao Padilla, Bishop of Ulaanbaatar, opened a monthly formation course for catechists in the Mongolian capital.

The first Mongolian mission was opened in 1992 by Msgr. Padilla, who arrived in Ulaanbaatar with two brothers of the Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Today there are 64 missionaries, who, from 18 countries, work with the local community, belonging to nine religious congregations and Korean diocese of Daejeon. Meanwhile, the Catholics has reached 415.

At the time, 16 catechists work both in Ulaanbaatar and Shuwuu: there are a total of three diocesan parishes in the country. Mrs. Rufina, who studied in Rome for three years, has been charged with coordination the mission and was presented to the team on October 9. Until now, the principal task of the group was to translate basic texts for Catholic Education from English to Mongolian. Now, things are about to change.

After a moment of encounter and dialogue about their mission, in fact, the catechists gathered to listen to the bishop. According to Msgr. Padilla "The Year of Faith and the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council call us to a new mission in a renewed drive for evangelization. Along with these anniversaries, Mongolia celebrates the first 20 years of independence: a difficult but also rewarding path. "

"Now - said the prelate - we must bring our third year pastoral program to every parish: Follow me on this path to holiness. It is your task to make sure that the message reaches all and is understood for what it is: a re-launching of faith and mission of the Church in Mongolia. "
