Tillerson: 'Ready to talk ' with North Korea ‘at any time’

A change of course compared to the US position demanding the disarmament of Pyongyang as a precondition. A "quiet period" is needed without missile tests. "Let's meet and talk". But Trump's position "has not changed".

Washington (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The United States is "ready to talk at any time" with North Korea, without preconditions. This is what was claimed yesterday by the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, during the political forum of the Atlantic Council in Washington.

Tillerson opened to dialogue, supporting the need for a "quiet period" beforehand, without missile or nuclear tests: " Let's just meet and let's talk about the weather if you want and talk about whether it's going to be a square table or a round table if that's what you're excited about ".

The position of the Secretary of State diverges from the one hitherto supported by the United States, which required the disarmament of Pyongyang as a prerequisite for negotiations. As reported by the White House a few hours after the declaration, Tillerson's vision does not even coincide with that of President Donald Trump, whose position "has not changed".

Relations between the United States and North Korea are at a critical point. Pyongyang's missile tests and the sanctions imposed by the United Nations have led to an escalation of tensions, exacerbated by the war of words between the two leaders.

Recently, the UN official Jeffrey Feltman went to North Korea. According to him, North Korean officials have not made any commitments, but agreed that "the discussion should continue". However, North Korea has made it clear that it has little interest in negotiations with the United States, before it has developed the ability to hit US territory with a nuclear missile. One thing that according to experts, it has not yet proven it is able to do.
