Too many children: expelled from party and risks redundancy

An official from the Communist Party has 5 children, with his wife and mistress, but only officially recognises two of them. He stops alimony payments to his mistress who reports him to the authorities. Now he is under investigation and risks losing his job.

Beijing (AsiaNews/Agencies) – He has 5 children, with his wife and mistress, but only officially recognises two of them.  He stops alimony payments to his mistress who reports him to the authorities. Now he has been expelled from the communist party and risks loosing his job.

Qin Huaiwen, 49, is director of Yulin city's Yuyang District Construction Bureau. He has three daughters with his wife but only declared two of them, while the third was registered under his wife's sister's name.  He also has a daughter, seven, and son, five, with the 31-year-old mistress.  The family ties only came to light after the mistress began complaining about a lack of child support and her second-rate position to Qin's wife. Qin denied his mistress' children were related to him, but DNA tests proved otherwise.

Qin was charged with adultery, and was expelled from the party as well as losing his job. An official who knows him said that Qin had "made the mistake" because of the traditional preference for boys over girls.

Since introducing the policy 28 years ago, authorities have kept a tight grip on family planning; particularly in urban areas were the imposed limit is one child per family.  Incidents of the rich buying their way around it have triggered discontent and prompted the National Population and Family Planning Commission to consider tougher punishments. Hunan governor said party officials will lose their qualifications if they breached the policy.
