Two Tibetan monks and a woman set themselves on fire: 119 immolations

The two young monks belonged to the Ngaba monastery (Sichuan). Little information on the 23-year old woman. Beijing increases controls on monasteries, cuts communications with the outside world and imprisons the promoters of these desperate protests.

Dharamsala (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Three Tibetans, two monks and a woman, set themselves on fire in Sichuan province yesterday, bringing to 119 the number of people who have self-immolated for the freedom of Tibet and against Chinese occupation. This type of protest has been ongoing since 2009.

The two monks are Lobsang Dawa, 20 (left), and Konchog Woeser, 23, both from the Kirti Monastery, Tagtsang Lhamo, in the province of Ngaba (Chinese: Aba). According to sources close to the monks, the two have set themselves on fire shouting against Chinese policy in Tibet and died around 18:30 yesterday, near the assembly hall of the monastery. Their bodies were immediately withdrawn by the monks who after a night vigil of prayer, held their cremation today.

The woman, 23, of which little is known, died after setting herself on fire yesterday at about two in the afternoon in Dzamthang (Chinese: Rangtang).

The Chinese authorities have increased control over Tibetan areas to prevent immolations, blocking communication with the outside world and arresting Tibetans who promote this kind of protest.

The Dalai Lama has often asked young people to preserve their lives, using them instead to protest i8n a more constructive and less desperate way.
