Typhoon Vicente leaves more than 500 injured and two dead
Hong Kong (AsiaNews) - More than 500 injured and two dead in Hong Kong is the provisional toll from the passage of typhoon Vicente, the strongest since 1999.
The storm warning was raised to No. 10 (the highest), with winds up to 140km per hour, yesterday after
midnight and lasted until this morning at 10 o'clock, after the typhoon turned
into a "severe tropical storm. "
At least 1000 trees were uprooted, there have been some landslides and areas of
land are flooded. The fall of a tree in the Tai Po area severed electricity supplies
and blocked hundreds of passengers in the underground subway for seven hours, at
Fo Tan Station.
The international airport resumed normal services in the afternoon. At least 60
flights were canceled, 16 diverted to other areas and more than 70 delayed. Approximately
266 residents had to find refuge in 24 shelters because of damage to their
homes.
The stock market was closed and only resumed in the afternoon. All day schools were
closed.
This morning, at 11 (local time) Vicente was 260 kilometers west
of Hong Kong. With winds at 22 miles per hour, it is
passing through Guangdong
and will touch Guangxi in the coming hours.
