U.S. presses India to apply sanctions against Iran
Mumbai (AsiaNews) - As the Us imposed new sanctions against Iran, Washington said it was talking to India, Pakistan, Russia and China about what they can do, particularly to wean themselves from Iranian crude. It was also talking to them about "doing what they can to increase sanctions". He secretary of state Hillary Clinton said: "We do assess that the pressure, economic and diplomatic, on Iran is beginning to pinch. And you see the fruit of that, and the fact that we...after many months, have Iran suggesting that we go back to the table."
Asked about Israel blaming Iran's Qods Force for a string of attacks on Israeli diplomats in India, Gerogia and Thailand, the state department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said: "I think we are still were we are, that we wouldn't be surprised if the fingerprints and the trail lead back to Iran but we are not in a position to assess until the investigations of the host governments are complete".
India particularly had been very cautious in not blaming Iran for the attacks in Delhi. The Government of India is having very good relations with both: Iran and Israel. However a top Israeli official has claimed that Indian intelligence agencies are not releasing the "considerable evidence" of Iran involvement in the February 13 attack on the Israeli diplomat's wife in a bid to avoid confrontation with Iran.
The senior Israeli official told the daily Ha'aretz that Indians were "close to fully solving the case but they are not saying so publicly". However, Indians have not "concealed the information in their possession" in quiet contact with Israeli and the US, he was quoted as saying by the paper. The Ha'aretz claimed that the Israeli official was close to the investigation. The Indians have located the bike used in the attack, identified the buyer and know how and when the attackers arrived in India, it said. Indians investigators were sent to Georgia and Thailand which saw attacks a short time after the New Delhi blast, and evidence was found of Iranian involvement in the attempts, the daily said.
