Vatican's 'Prayerful Solidarity' for Muslim during Ramadan

The message published today is the 50th in the history of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. The vocation for the care of creation, our "common home".

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - "Prayerful solidarity" and the greeting of "serenity, joy and abundant spiritual gifts" are offered to Muslims for this Ramadan by the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue. In a Message signed by the President of the Card. Jean-Louis Tauran and the Secretary, Msgr. Miguel Ángel Ayuso Guixot, published today, remembers that the first Message sent for the occasion of Ramadan was 50 years ago, only three years after the formation of the Pontifical Council.

Ramadan is the month of daily prayer and fasting broken only at night for a festive dinner (Iftar, see photo) and ends with the feast of Idah al-Fitr. This year the month began on 27 May and ends on June 24th.

Following this period and some of the most significant messages from John Paul II to Pope Francis, the text focuses on the theme of this year: "Christians and Muslims: Caring for our Common Home", which resumes some ideas launched by Pope Francis in his Encyclical "Laudato Sì".

"Pope Francis - says the Message - draws attention to the harm our lifestyles and decisions are causing to the environment, to ourselves and to our fellow human beings. There are, for example, certain philosophical, religious, and cultural perspectives that present obstacles which threaten humanity’s relationship with nature. To take up this challenge involves all of us, regardless of whether or not we profess a religious belief. The Encyclical’s title itself is expressive: the world is a “ common home”, a dwelling for all the members of the human family. Therefore, no one person, nation or people can impose exclusively their understanding of our planet. "

The text recalls that "the ecological crisis is an appeal to a profound inner conversion" and that custody of creation is part of "our religious commitment as Christians and Muslims."

It concludes: “May the religious insights and blessings that flow from fasting, prayer and good works sustain you, with God’s help, on the path of peace and goodness, to care for all the members of the human family and for the whole of creation".
