‘Adopt a Christian from Mosul’ campaign continues (see video)

by Bernardo Cervellera
About € 1.2 million have been raised so far. It is urgent to find housing and containers for 130,000 Christian refugees who fled from Mosul under the threat of the Islamic State group. Responding to Pope’s Francis’ call to action, we cannot “stand silently by” whilst our brothers and sisters are persecuted.

Rome (AsiaNews) – For months now, Pope Francis and the Iraqi Church have been imploring us not to "stand silently by" "or "look the other way" as our brothers and sisters suffer persecution because of their faith.

The Pope has asked Christians to "pray intensely" in an "effective participation" and as a sign of "tangible support" for all of them. Hence, some time ago, AsiaNews launched the ‘Adopt a Christian from Mosul’ campaign. This has allowed us to raise approximately € 1.2 million (US$ 1.35 million), which have been used to meet the daily needs of Iraqi refugees who fled Mosul under the threat of the Islamic State group.

Their needs continue to be huge and their return home is not going to happen anytime soon. Because of this, the bishops have adopted a plan to move from emergency initiatives to a more stable relief programme. This has entailed the move of all Christian refugees – about 130,000 people or 21,000 families – to permanent housing, where they can restart their lives, get a job, and think about their children's future.

With this in mind, AsiaNews is calling again on its readers and friends to continue their support for our ‘Adopt a Christian from Mosul’ campaign so that we can help cover the costs of this project, which now stands at about € 3.5 million (US$ 4 million).

In order to promote this campaign and help others understand the situation in which our brothers and sisters live, AsiaNews has produced a video for viewing, downloading and sharing (click here).
