Taipei (AsiaNews/Agencies) The President and Vice President of the Republic of China did not fake the slight gunshot wounds they received on the eve of the last elections. This is what the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said during a press conference, unveiling their ballistic report on the incident which was based on a simulated shooting test. Opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and the People First Party (PFP), which had lost the presidential elections by only 30,000 votes on 20 March, accuse the re-elected President Chen Shuibian, of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), that the assassination attempt was staged to get votes.
"We tried to simulate all of the known circumstances of the incident. We will submit the results to the American expert for his reference so that he may complete his report", said Hou You-yi, commissioner of the CIB. Dr. Henry Lee, a forensic scientist, who has been cooperating with the investigation since last April, visited President Chen Shuibian, ruling out the possibility that the gunshot wound was a fake.
The investigation and the test carried out by CIB have not led to the arrest of any suspects, nor has it appeased the controversy or stopped the protests by opposition leaders, who continue making accusations against Chen Shuibian of having orchestrated a fake assassination attempt and rigged elections.
