Muslims offering concrete help to bring reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas

Nahdlatul Ulama, the country’s largest Muslim organisation, offer President Abbas concrete help to reconcile Palestinian political groups as a necessary step towards independence.

Jakarta (AsiaNews) – Indonesia’s largest Muslim association, the Nahdlatul Ulama, has offered to provide “concrete help to bring together the various Palestinian political parties and social groups in order to re-establish their unity.” The offer was made by the organisation’s president, Kiai Haj Hasyim Muzadi, to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas who is on an official visit to Jakarta.

Hidayat Nur Wahid, speaker of Indonesia’s People's Consultative Assembly, and Agung Laksono, speaker of the People's Representative Council, made the same offer.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono gave his “full support” for a Palestinian state.

Palestinian President Abbas thanked his Indonesian hosts and accepted their offer.

Palestinian diplomats in post in Jakarta and Nahdlatul Ulama officials will discuss technical details as soon as possible, he said.
